The Ritz-Carlton Boston
In 1927, Edward N. Wyner, a local Boston real estate developer, was asked by Mayor Curley to build a world-class hotel. Wyner, who was constructing an apartment building and was up to the second floor at the time, agreed and changed the apartment building into a hotel. Because of the reputation of Ritz in Europe and the cosmopolitan society in Boston, Wyner knew The Ritz-Carlton name would secure immediate success. He received permission from The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company and The Ritz Paris’ for use of the name and set out to create luxury in the heart of Boston. The Ritz-Carlton, Boston opened on May 19, 1927 with a room rate of $15.
In the tradition of Cesar Ritz, Wyner was meticulous about maintaining the privacy of his guests; a policy strictly adhered to today in all Ritz-Carlton hotels. And thus, the elite were drawn to his hotel. However, he was also very aware of the role and reputation the hotel had in the community: during the Depression Wyner kept the lights on in vacant hotel rooms to portray an aura of success.
The Ritz-Carlton, Boston was regarded as a private club for the very wealthy. Up until the 1960s, the hotel was very formal. Guests were regularly checked to see if they were in the Social Register or Who’s Who and the hotel sometimes went so far as to examine the quality of writing paper on which the guests wrote to the hotel requesting reservations (if it wasn’t of high enough quality, they were refused).
Dress codes were enforced for all guests, in great part due to the formality of Boston society. Restaurants were also very stringent with regard to whom they admitted. Women were not allowed to lunch alone in The Café. Unescorted women were not allowed to enter The Ritz Bar until 1970.
Cuisine in the hotel restaurants was created in the hallowed tradition of Cesar Ritz’s partner Auguste Escoffier. The cuisine at The Ritz-Carlton has always been classic but never boring, innovative but never trendy. The popular entree Lobster au Whiskey was served on the hotel’s opening night in 1927 and remains a favorite dinner item today.
The combination of cuisine and atmosphere ensured the restaurants were “the place” to swing, previewing such musical greats as Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. The Roof closed in 1944, but was reopened to great success in the summer of 1995. Today, guests can enjoy gourmet dining and dancing under the stars to a live big band.
More plays were written or reworked at the Boston hotel than anywhere else in the United States. Richard Rodgers composed “Ten Cents a Dance” on a piano in a Ritz-Carlton suite, Oscar Hammerstein wrote the lyrics to “Edelweiss” in the shower during an overnight stay and Tennessee Williams wrote part of “A Streetcar Named Desire” while a guest at the hotel. In addition to hosting numerous famous personalities, the hotel also entertained an extraordinary number of animals including: Rin Tin Tin, Morris the Cat and Louis the Swan (the central character in E.B. White’s classic children’s book “The Trumpet of the Swan”).
The hotel maintained its own upholstery and print shops and even had a craftsman in-house whose sole job was to paint the gold stripes on the hotel’s furniture. As a result of this convenience, the hotel often catered to the whims of important guests. A suite for Joan Crawford was decorated with peppermint Lifesavers because it was her favorite candy and the guest room furniture in Winston Churchill’s room was reupholstered in red, his favorite color.
Edward Wyner died in 1961. The land developers Cabot, Cabot & Forbes and their chairman and major shareholder, Gerald W. Blakely, owned and managed the hotel. However, the Ritz legacy endured with Charles Ritz, son of Cesar Ritz, who was an active board member of The Ritz-Carlton until his death in 1977.
In 1983, Blakely sold the hotel and the rights to The Ritz-Carlton name to William B. Johnson, who established The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.
2006: Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, one of Asia’s largest and finest hotel groups, has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase The Ritz-Carlton, Boston Hotel from its current owners, Millennium Partners. The $170 million transaction is scheduled to close on January 11, 2007.

The Madrid Ritz
In 2010 the Ritz celebrated its 100th anniversary. It is one of the last elegant European capital hotels still radiating the air of yesterday, a luxruy of a bygone time, elegant and refined, yet state-of-the-art und in fact very contemporary.
“You have arrived at the Ritz in Madrid, slowly coasting into the thick carpets of the lobby. Engines are shutting down. The flight-comparison is carefully chosen – you were virtually propelled in by a bewitchingly smiling page girl who had given the revolving door a well calculated push at the right moment. You have passed the concierge desk on the right and checked in at the enchanting reception room to the left. Your luggage is in the room and you have landed.
Now let’s explore the lobby, the field of deployment of the local and international socialites’ armies.
Rarely do we encounter buzzing cosmopolitan flair in the company of such seducing and relaxed atmosphere. At the grand piano, Vincent plays ‘it’ again. Tourists gather at the low tables, unfolding large maps, discussing the tours of the day. Delicate Spanish ladies teeter in high heels through the meadows of deep pile carpets, thankful for reaching the other end without a major accident. Their elegant costumes tell us about the wedding, the christening, the ceremony they are attending in one of the salons of the hotel, or at the Bar, or El Restaurante Goya. The Ritz is the place where the society of Madrid likes to meet.
But the Ritz also stretches its arms wide open to the foreign visitor, permanently composing an air that immediately makes you feel at home. Once at the Ritz, you are the focus of the staff, they follow every movement, every sign, and even if they seem to leave you unattended, they do it because you wish it. Hollywood actor Richard Gere stayed here for an undisclosed amount of time – the staff kept so perfectly mum that not even the most persuading Paparazzi had a glue. For the marriage of the Crown Prince of Asturias, Felipe, some 20 delegations – mostly crowned heads of all countries, resided at the Ritz.
A challenge for the staff, heaven for the guests.
Madrid is one of the architecturally most exciting cities of Europe. Old blends harmoniously with new. The Ritz, I dare to say, gives me once again that feeling of being at one of the great classic grand hotels in the world. The wooden panelling, the impressive Henry Lepaute clock behind the concierge desk, the revolving door at the entrance – all this sums up to a pillow of cosy comfort one loves to rest on.
From the Ritz you are at the Prado museum in 60 seconds. Rooms facing south overlook it. The Thyssen-Bornemisza museum is across the street, at the threshold of the historic centre of Madrid, which at some point is called Madrid de los Austrias. That stems from the days when the Habsburgs ruled Spain and the sun never set over their global empire. The Ritz was born into the Spanish monarchy of the Bourbons. Alfonse XIII, the son of Alfonso XII and Maria Christina of Austria, had this brilliant idea of encouraging the right people to build a luxurious hotel in their capital. Grand Marnier
One day in 1880, César Ritz sampled a grandiose, enchanting liquor. Made from cognac and essence of oranges, he named it Grand Marnier, as a tribute to its creator Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. This moment would mark the beginning of a great friendship between the two men, which lasted throughout their lifetime.
Here is a luxurious Grand Marnier Cocktail:
Red Lion
30 ml gin (I use BOMBAY SAPPHIRE London Dry Gin)
30 ml Grand Marnier
15 ml fresh orange juice
15 ml fresh lemon juice
Shake. Strain into cocktail glass with sugar rim.
This cocktail has rich, smooth and sweet taste. It is great afterdinner drink. As for me, it is real symbol of luxury.

From "The Swordfish" to Jack Dusty
Charles Ritz, son of César Ritz, shared with Ernest Hemingway a passion for trout fishing. In 1956, the hotel Grill was therefore renamed with the evocative name "L'Espadon", meaning swordfish. The decision to serve refined seafood dishes, proved somewhat unpopular among the Directors of the hotel at the time. However, despite the initial reluctance of some, the idea was warmly welcomed, and the restaurant quickly filled with en vogue Parisian diners.
Likewise, in Sarasota, the hotel Grill of The Ritz Carlton was made over into "Jack Dusty", a restaurant of Coastal Cuisine and Crafted Cocktails.

At the time of the construction of a second building facing the Cambon Street, a long corridor of 110 metres was built, linking the new building and the main edifice. César Ritz, in a stroke of genius, suggested to his wife who was saddened by its gloominess, that she decorates it with beautiful ornaments, in order to distract customers from its narrow darkness. Ever since, this glum passage has been transformed into the gallery of temptations, warm and refined space, showcase for luxurious items.

"A little house upon which I am proud to put my name", such is the way César Ritz described his hotel on the day of the inauguration. Today, the Ritz retains the atmosphere of a private home, bringing together French "art de vivre", alongside British comfort and cosiness. When the Duke and Duchess of York disembarked from their boat, arriving for their sojourn in the French capital, they were greeted by the concierges of the Ritz Paris. Facing the Place Vendôme, their suite was configured to their liking by their designated staff. The Duke of Windsor made this haven of peace and intimacy, a place for contemplation and reflection, and it was here that, he wrote a number of chapters of his memoirs towards the end of the 1950's.
Maybe this was the start of The Residences.

Marcel Proust
Invited to the hotel's inauguration, he was one of the first regulars of the Ritz, a perfect venue for contemplation, and a true "observatory" of Parisian life. Watching the world go by, and taking in the "air du temps" it is here that he found inspiration for his future characters. In the cosy and intimate setting of a private room, he often enjoyed the company of guests for dinner. His legendary friendship with the maître d'hotel Olivier Dabescat is depicted in "A la recherche du temps perdu" under the traits of Aimé, of the Grand Hotel of Balbec.
