Pervasive Inventions

Charles Ritz spoke lovingly and proudly about his father and his pervasive inventions: the king-size bed, indirect lighting, wall-to-wall carpeting, closet lights that automatically activate when the door is opened.

He and I had a good laugh over his recounting of a bathroom incident involving the porcine King Edward VII, who enjoyed soaking in the bathtub, often with a comely lady companion. On this occasion, the corpulent king got stuck in the tub. His pretty little companion escaped, but, try as she might, she couldn’t budge him. Desperate, she pulled a cord that summoned a pair of grooms, who extricated His Highness. To avoid another such embarrassment, César had king-size bathtubs made for the entire hotel.
